I was vacationing in Bhutan. A stray dog caught my attention. He was sitting low near an abandoned shop. He had one eye that looked blue and the other brown. I thought he was very handsome. I greeted him and then moved towards our restaurant for lunch. Somehow all through the lunch I had recurring thoughts that asked me to carry food for him. Heeding to my internal promptings, I packed some food. Our tourist guide said he would offer the food to the dogs who were right outside the restaurant and I thought it was okay and consented.
However, after a while, I somehow kept feeling uneasy and decided to pack some more food for the second time for the dog I had seen earlier. We walked to the spot where we had found him resting and saw that he was missing. With my heart heavy, I offered the food for another dog who was also hungry.
And just when the all the food was empty, there he was! He came running towards us, wagging his tail feebly, and my heart knew he was starving. We walked to the restaurant for the third time to get some more food. The restaurant owner now realizing we were buying food for the stray dogs, offered it to us free of charge.
We ran back quickly to offer him the food. We feared he would disappear again. But this time, he was waiting for us. He ate heartily, in great haste, and looked so grateful. I have never felt so emotional before. I realized he was constantly sending me messages that he was hungry and that was why my heart was repeatedly going back into the restaurant to bring him food.
That is the moment I reiterated to myself to never ever ignore the voice of my intuition. Someone is constantly connecting with us at all times. We must be prepared to reach out at all times. I requested the tour guide to encourage the tourists to pack their left overs and feed the strays that are starving. He agreed to inform his company to take the initiative up officially.
As I was conversing with the tour guide, my husband who is a surgeon, examined the dog’s eyes and said, I was wrong in my assumption that the dog had one eye that was in stunning blue and the other in brown. The fact was that he was blind in that eye that had gone blue. It all began to unfold before us. This was why he was unable to look for food. The pack of stray dogs that looked powerful and fit were aggressively isolating him. It was the survival of the fittest out there! He was starving.
We don’t know for how long we silently cried for him as our car left the town forever. We may never see him again but we prayed that every day at least one tourist gets his telepathic message and feeds him. If it’s you, don’t ignore the messages of the stray animals around you. Your kind gesture may give them one more day to live. Your attempt will give hope for humanity. However, do abide by the laws of the country before you attempt anything.
